You might have a piece of metal or something on the sound card
I remember a mod to connect an actual volume control knob to a sound card so there are physical contacts on the card to do this up down thing
Pull out your sound card and first inspect it for damaged, burnt components THEN clean it really well Cockroach droppings can short contacts too-a real problem here in texas for electronics (luckily my neighborhood is infested with wood destroying carpenter ants that kill all roaches)
