Folks,

Just recently clicking on the up or down arrow on a vertical scroll bar turns the cursor into a circle with down and up arrows, and the display scrolls vertically. The circle is a little larger than the arrow box on the scroll bar.

Clicking on the circle restores the regular display so its more of a nuisance than a real problem.

I think this is Windows since I've seen it in FrameMaker, Outlook, and other applications.

Also, it's intermittent: may happen one a day, may happen twice a week.

I'll bet you're using IntelliPoint mouse software if it looks like a circle with an up triangle on top, a down tirangle on the bottom and a dot in the middle. If so, it is used for scrolling and is generated from the pressing of the scroll wheel in the mouse. Moving the pointer outside the circle will cause the scroll to start without having to use the scroll bar or wheel.

If that's not what it is, please describe it more detail.

WindowWizard,

I'm using a Logitech M/N:M-S34 two-button mouse (labeled Dell) with no scroll wheel, although apparently clicking both right and left buttons together turns it to scrolling (says the Control Panel Mouse Menu). However, I'm not doing that. I use the buttons separately. Mouse driver is release 9.75. Not sure if that's the latest, but I will check.

Thanks.

I have a Logitech S40a mouse on our Dell system. (It does have the wheel.) However, the mouseware helpful file says that a button can be assigned to autoscrolling if the mouse you have doesn't have a wheel. My guess is that's what you're seeing. Here's what the help file says:

To set up scrolling

1. Click here to display the Mouse Properties.
2. Click the Buttons tab.
3. Assign the Universal Scroll or AutoScroll option to a mouse button or wheel button.

Note: You can assign Universal Scroll or AutoScroll to a mouse button or wheel button; the mouse wheel only performs horizontal and vertical scrolling.

4. If you have a wheel mouse and you wish to use Microsoft Office Compatible Scroll Only, check this option.
If you have a mouse with no wheel and you wish to use this option, click the Options button, then choose the AutoScroll tab in the dialog box that displays. On the AutoScroll tab, select Microsoft Office Compatible Scroll Only.

5. Click the Options button to display additional Universal Scroll or AutoScroll options.

Note: If you use Microsoft® Office(TM)-compatible applications extensively, you might wish to select the Microsoft Office Compatible Scroll feature for smoother scrolling. You can choose this feature in the Buttons tab of the Mouse Properties.

this is auto-scroll, when enabled the copy will move up or down at a rate pursuant to the distance you have placed the arrow from the icon. great feature, avoids having to mind the cursor while reading lengthy copy. i dont use the wheel much, just autoscroll slowly while i read. if i want to stop and re rea a section i just click and stop. if you have alreaady gotten your answer, sorry for the redundancy.

halfmile,

Yes, I did intentionally activate the AutoScroll by pressing both mouse buttons together. However, the cursor that results isn't like the cursor I'm inquiring about. It's a circle all right but it contains a four-direction arrow emanating from a central circle.

What I'm seeing an up-and-down arrow in a circle, but with no central circle.

Take a screen shot and email it to me. I have no idea what you are looking at, if it's not the autoscroll anchor or icon.

I'll try, but I don't think I'll be able to catch it in action.
