using windows xp, when i shut down my laptop if it is connected to mains via A/c adapter it shutd down, but when it is on battery only then it shuts down but after 3 to 4 seconds the laptop powers on again by itself. tried new firmware, replaced batery and even re-installed XP but the problem persists

HELP!!!!!!!!!

I would start with updating the chipset drivers, the reason for this is that ACPI may be the fault here, well actually the OS may think that it is, detects an error and reboots...

while on AC, the power management detects no fault and powers down successfully...

Disabling the “restart on system failure” feature may permit the exact cause to be isolated: Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,” click Settings. Under “System Failure,” uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”
