Ok here is the low down.
I can't access some websites from the workstations on my domain, but I can access those same websites from the server.

I have a Windows 2000 Server with AD installed. Workstations are Windows 2000 Pro. Internet connection goes into server and out to network (no external router).

Everything had been working fine for the past year, then suddenly, this problem occured. No new software, no new hardware, no setting changes on the server, nothing. The workstations can ping the domain name and return the correct ip address, but when the domain OR the IP is typed into a browser (IE or FireFox) nothign is displayed. The page will eventually time out, but it takes much longer than normal (about 20-30 minutes)

I have reformatted my server and resetup the network. I have reformatted and re set up a workstation. Everything else is working fine, except for the websites on this one particular server. Once again, I can access it from the server, but not the workstations. No router / firewall / etc. And everything has been reformatted today. Any help or guidance would be appreciated. --Tom

Make sure your DNS IP address in all workstations pointing to your server IP Address.

I just tried that... no avail.

The workstations were getting DNS jsut frine from the server, but I put it in manually... No avail.

I don't think it is a DNS issue... the name resolves properly (the workstations can ping the domain name) they just can not connect to it through the browser.

This is only happening on one server... Everything else on the internet seems to be working fine except for web browsing to any of the websites on that one server (my sites, located with a hosting company)

Did you run a trace route in one of the workstation to your hosted server?

You're saying that you don't have router or firewall. need more info on how do you set up your network?

traceroute works fine...

from workstation... to the server... to the internet.. the the webserver

Network Setup

From modem
into Windows 2000 Server
Out of server
Into Hub
To workstations
(Some workstations are in another building and the two buildinga are linked via a wireless link, but ALL worstations are affected, so the wireless is not hte problem)

Did you try Flushing the DNS. I have a similar issue and flusing the DNS and Deleting the Temp Internet files worked.

Yes..

I did ipconfig /flushdns on both the workstation and the server..

No help there

Thanks for the link..

I am not running ICS

I have Active Directory Installed and am using NAT.

From the server the internet works fine

From the workstations the internet works fine, except to one webserver - but I can ping it so I know I have connection, I can ping the NAME of the server, so DNS is working correctly, from the server(in house) I can view the website(s) on the webserver, but I can not wiew the website(s) on the webserver from the workstations...

clear as mud yet :)

Try this, on your DNS server add new Host (A) "WWW" (without the quote)with IP address to your specify external webserver.

This issue is very interesting and challenging.

I tired adding in the host (www) into the dns...

no luck

I also read that NAT link you sent...

That is how things are set up..

I also went through and redid it to make sure that I didn't miss something...

No luck

O.k...... Last resort before I'm running out of any idea. On your workstation, go to the following directory c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc In this folder you should have hosts (no extension) and lmhosts.sam files (There should be no any other hosts or lmhost with any other extension). Open "hosts" file with notepad, make sure it's only contain 127.0.0.1 localhost line any line with preceeding # sign is o.k. as it's comment only. in lmhosts.sam file there's should be no entry except preceeding # sign. If you fing any line not describe in above, delete it and restart the computer. Good luck....

Are you trying to hit an internal or extrenal Web Server?

I guess I should mention this as well..

The problem is not with the workstations... If taken off the network and connected to the internet through a dial up.. they can view the site(s) just fine...

The problem HAS to be on the server with it not allowing the workstations to see one particular webserver

if I ping www

it gives the reply of the correct address of the webserver

what happened if you just type URL of one of the workstation? Something telling me that your web server might be using dynamic port and your server can't translate it properly. This is only guessing but it's worth to check with your hosting company.
