Ok, heres how I had it setup.

3 sunon 80mm case fans. 1 160gig sata maxtor dimond max 9 hd. 1 fan controller controlling two fans.

I decided I had to many cables showing so I wanted to hide some in the back of the mobo (other side of the case). I got everything situated, the hd was on its own 12v power chain and the fans were on another. When I booted I had a data read error. So I rebooted, windows came up but extreamly slow. I ran HDTach and I was getting like a max read of 1mb/s yes 1. I rebooted and took the fans off. It was back to normal. I rebooted again with 1 fan hooked up, same problem again...slow as a snail. I had 4 fans hooked up before. I have only 3 now. I have since removed the fan controller and still have the same probs. It works fine and dandy if I unplug all the fans. Thanks in advance.

btw I have a antec smartpower 400watt. Model sl400.

I also use an Antec smartpower and it has a couple of four wire power connectors for drives. It also has two power connectors (two wire) that are used for cooling fans. Do you have any of these mixed up?

My fans have 4 wire connectors (12v) and it has worked fine. Not sure if thats the prob.

Sorry, I wasn't clear: the power leads from the psu has two four wire plugs (standard plugs), but only 2 wires in them. The others have four wires.

My power supply has 3- 4 wire plugs x 3 (3 sets of 3 plugs). The fans are running off of one 3 set of plugs (or were), the hd has its own seperate, and the cdroms run off of the other 3 set. This is not a big deal now since im watercooling, I was thinking about it for weeks before this happened, this was just a good reason to take the plunge. But this proves to me that the fans did help. I have my system overclocked from a 2.0 to 2.2 and it has locked up about 10 times since the fans have been cut off. Thanks for the replys
