Website Blocker

I work for a small 20 employee business using an SBS 2003 server. The boss has just asked me to install something to block users on the LAN from going to malicious and adult websites. As all DNS and web requests go thru the server, I was hoping there would be an application out there to do this under SBS 2003. Does anyone out there have any recommendations for something they've used that really works??

What type of router do you have? Are you using ISA server with SBS? If you just block DNS resolution of the sites with the pictures of dirty sneakers they can still get there via IP Address or just change their pc's to use your upstream DNS.

ISA might be a start if you're running premium edition, but I'm not sure that there is anything native to SBS 2003 standard edition that would prevent bad surfing habits.

Depending on your router there might be something in it to help filter or block access. Try the OEMs website.

A lot of the SMB firewall appliances have a WebBlocker add-on subscription that would take care of this. The WatchGuard Firebox, for example, allows this. That's probably the best route.

Another route would be to look into Trend's offerings, since I think that they offer a web-security product for the server that would offer this functionality.

If you have specific sites you want to block you can do that by messing with the DNS locally.
