I have the full version of Acrobat 5 on my computer (Windows XP), and version 7 of the Reader. When I click on PDFs linked to in websites, Acrobat 5 is automatically invoked, which means that if the PDF is relatively new, the PDF cannot be opened and the computer freezes. This means I have to download the PDF and manually open it in Reader - do-able but a nuisance.

I have tried associating Reader 7 with PDFs by right clicking on a PDF in Explorer and choosing 'Open With', but Reader 7 is not even listed. But I know for sure it is installed on the computer!! Is there any way to make Reader 7 the default application for opening PDFs?

I forgot to add... when trying to set the default program, I can browse to the exe file of Reader (AcroRd32.exe), make it the default, ensure I click the 'always open with' button and although it works on whatever PDF I have chosen to make the setting, the next time I try (either with a website PDF or double clicking one already on my computer), it reverts back to trying to open it in Acrobat 5.

I cant try this because im not using the same setup, im on a mac right now and I dont use IE.. but give it a shot anyways.

But try this out

Close IE

Load up your Acrobat 5 and go to your preferences
Edit > Preferences > General
Select Options on the list
Uncheck Display PDF in Browser
<ok>
Close Acrobat 5

Load up Reader 7 and go to your preferences
Edit > Preferences
Select Web Capture in list
Set Open Web Links to 'In Web Browser' (if its on turn it off, hit ok, go back and set it to 'In Web Browser' -Just for good measure)
<ok>
Close Reader 7

Fire up IE and try loading a PDF

I think thats where the menus are but im not 100% sure because I dont have them in front of me to check.

Cheers,
Dropkick Murphy

Ifg you're using Exploroer, take a look at prefs - Helpers and see what it calls for in pdfs.

Also make sure that you don't have the Ac5 plugin for IE in your plugins folder, It might be easiest to trash any pdf plugins and reinstall the Reader 7 one.

Haven't used IE in quite some time so I don't remember that much, but I sort of remember those 2 things.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

dropkickmurphy - Success!!!! By unchecking 'Display PDF in Browser' in Acrobat 5, the problem seems to be solved. Thank you.

jmgalvin - I couldn't find any Ac5 plugin for IE in the plugins folder, but things are now back to how they should be. Thanks for the response.
