Hi,

I am making my own family website. I got most of the pages and I'm look for a new website.
Do you have any recommend web-hosting site for buying website domain name plus webspace of 500MB? Looking for a cheaper deal, good web space, long term domain name (1 or 2 year) and is in UK.

Thanks

JKANG

I would recommend you buy the domain name seperately to the hosting. It's dirt cheap - go to somewhere like UKreg or 123reg and it'll cost about a fiver for two years.

The reason is, if you're looking at the cheaper end of the hosting market, there's a chance your host could go belly-up one day. If they do, you'll find it a lot easier to move your site if you control the domain yourself.

As to hosting, there's a guy who posts on this forum called Wullie who runs . He tends to get good feedback from his customers (though I'm not one of them as he doesn't (yet) offer unix hosting).

Try - the Developer package may be to your liking for £7.99 p/m because you get:

ASP.NET 2.0, ASP, PHP, Perl, Python
ODBC or MySQL database
Password protected folders
SSL secure web space
2 GB of UK web space
Virus & spam protected email

Their standard package is £3.99 and you get 750Mb of webspace with that

ChrisHunt and BabyJeffy,

Thanks for your reply.

OK I will buy separately one for domain name and one for hosting. Got the idea for domain name but not sure about which hosting. Is it straightforward for signup in Yetihost?

For hosting website, my programming is very basic like standard HTML, javascript. Will this work in YetiHost? I don't have other program like PHP, Perl, Flash and so on.

How much in general average for most hosting website per year if I am looking for standard home website?

Site5 is the company I'm using for my hosting accounts - both at work and outside. Very cheap for the features they offer.

I am also a customer of Wullie and YetiHost - very good service and excellent support. I too recommend them.

You mean you're not planning on writing any programs in php/perl/etc. ? That's fine, but it's still worth getting a hosting plan which includes support for such server-side languages (almost all plans will do so, btw).

The reason is that there are thousands of scripts out there that you can get - often for free - to add features to your site. You don't say much about what you're planning on putting on your site, but scripted content could include an image gallery, a forum, a blog, a search engine, etc.

I buy my domain names from networksolutions...

I use Lunarpages.com for hosting ... have been very happy with them.

I've had good results from GoDaddy for both domain registration and hosting, and their costs are fairly low. They've been around a few years, haven't read anything (yet) negative about them.

powweb.com

20 gb space, 200gb monthly transfer, free domain for a year ($15 after that), 5 databases, forums, photo galleries, blofs, 650 email addresses, etc. No setup fee.

Right now, 5.77 USD a month. Regular is $7.77 USD a month. I've been with them for about 6 years now and their support is fantastic and downtime is nil.

**Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur.**

Used them for a couple of years now w/o any complaints. So have some of my clients.

Setup (including .com domain name) is 12 EUR
1.25 EUR/mo
1 GB, free traffic, unlimited emails, blog, php, aps, mysql, ftp and frontpage.
