web.config changes being lost

I'm using Visual Studio .net 2005 and everytime I modify the web.config file, then recompile, the changes I made dissappear and it reverts back to the web.config file before the edit.

Is this a setting in Visual Studio?

Are you modifying it INSIDE VS or in /bin directory? You must update it inside VS and then it moves it to the \bin directory after compile.
