I am using windows server 2003 small business and I need to have remote email access through a website instead of using an email client (i.e. outlook). Does anyone know how to set this up? I know that Windows Server can do it but not sure how to set it up. Please help, thanks.

It is called Outlook Web Access and is installed by default in SBS. Go to and check.

Check to make sure you did not lock out your account. Under Inetmgr check to see if the exchange OWA is configured to use windows authentication. Are you using SSL for this? Have you tried browsing the OWA site directly from the exchange server to rule out any other network issues?

Here is the config. This server is running everthing: exchange, DNS, and multiple websites with multiple email addresses. I want to make it so I can access all the email accounts via the web browser. Everthing works fine with IMAP4, POP3, and SMTP. There are no other computers on the domain but the server. The server is going through a router. Like I said, everything with the server is working perfectly except the web based email access.
The server name is ns1.mydomain.net and static local is 192.188.66.20.
When I change another computer on the network to use the ns1 as the dns (deleting the ISP dns) I am able to use but it is not giving me the web based form login but one that is like the one on protected directories. When I try it on the server, it automaticly logs me in to the Admin email account. It is set to use SSL which is ok as along as it works (doesn't have to be). I have tried playing with the permissions in the IIS on the different exchange folders (including removing the windows authentication). But then all it gets me is access denied messages. This shouldn't be this hard.
My goal is to get it so when someone types in it will they will be able to log in.

Ok, so the protected directory password thing is not that bad. If I type in the browser (on local computer with DNS set to 192.188.66.20) then it works just doesn't have to pretty Outlook Web Access Login form. I am ok with that although I rather have to pretty login form. But on that same computer, when I type in it doesn't work. I have checked the dns settings and everything checks out ok. When I type in I do get the default site (the exchange folder is in the default site).

It also works when I type in on the server but not on any other computer; even the one that has the DNS set as 192.188.66.20.

The clients are in a different city and are using the ISPs DNS. The ones that do are set to use the server as DNS work, but only work with If you go on the server itself; it works with the but it doesn't work on any computer even if the DNS is set to the server. Only the works. The client are able to connect without a problem using IMAP and SMTP with outlook so I know the users and such are set correctly. I am thinking it is some kind of permission problem which threw the little experience I have had so far with windows server 2003 is what causes most of the problems.

Are you using SSL? If so you will have to go to whichever address you specified in the certificate.
This sounds like a name resolution issue to me more than an issue with the exchange server. Do you host your own site? Is that site on this machine?
Go to and put in your site and see if it is pointing to the server with exchange. The server IP that is returned will be the server your remote users are attempting to use for OWA.

Yep, I am running multiple web site on the server without a problem and the email accounts are work perfectly sending and receiving email from outside sources. There is a certificate installed. I don't know that much about the SSL certificates. Is there a way for now to disable the SSL certificates so I can get it to work; this way I can research SSL certificates more.

It does use once you sign on.
An SSL certificate will only work with the domain name it was ordered for. If the cert was ordered for NS1 and that is not the site name you are using it will not work. You will need to order a cert for the FQDN you are using for the server you are using.
If you want to disable SSL go into intemgr, right click the site and select properties. Under Directory security select secure communications and deselct require SSL. This will disable ssl for the site and you can see if this resolves the issue. I do not recommend leaving the setting this way because it leaves everything wide open.

Take that back, it looks like it is working. One more thing. I do want to intergrate the SSL. The company will be sending emails with customer information in them and need a secured authencation when using IMAP, SMTP, and the web based system. I noticed that GoDaddy.com sells SSL certificates. I am assuming I will have to purchase one from a place like that inorder to run it on this server.

Ok, I read up a little on the SSL certificates. I am hosting multiple websites and would just register secure.mydomain.net and have that forward to the root web directory. This way, client (client1site.com) that wish to use SSL/HTTPS they can do it by linking to:
But there is just one problem I am unsure about; that is the email (the main reason for getting an SSL). How would this work with the IMAP and SMTP? Would the new SMTP and IMAP be secure.mydomain.net instead? Would that work?
