I just bought the WD2000JB 200 gig ATA hard drive and received it in the mail yesterday. Installation was relatively easy -- at first it wasn't recognized, but after a reboot it was. Then I formatted it and even installed a game on it.
So I leave my computer on all night (I usually turn it off), and I wake up to hearing clicking noises -- generally at random times. Sometimes there are a few clicks in a small period of time, sometimes there is only one click. The hard drive is not recognized at all.
I change it from master to slave to see if it would do anything and this time the drive wasn't detected and there was no clicking noises either. After changing back to master, I start up the computer and hear a winding-down, screeching and scratching noise for approximately 3 seconds. Soonafter, it starts slightly smoking and releases a distinct smell.
Ok, the brand new hard drive is broken obviously. The main question: Was it a faulty hard drive, or did my computer cause it to break? (Computer is only 1 year old, currently running an SATA HD as the main one just fine).
Second question -- I heard about a card that you can use to plug in an SATA HD directly into. Would this be a good idea to use?
Thanks
