Way to keep programs in background?

I'm frustrated that when i start a proram to load/run and while it's doing this I want to view an open web page or check email that the opening program keeps coming to the front. I'd love it to just stay in the back ground and I'll get to it when i want. This happens with other programs that are simply just processing and need to come into focus. Any settings in XP pro that I can make to adjust these actions?

What about changing the 'Run' setting on the shortcut properties to 'Minimised'?

good idea. I guess would want a system wide, run minimized or run background.
