I think they wav files have to be 8-bit mono using ulaw or alaw.
More than likely it was prob some IT geek that tried sending you standard windows type wav files and didn't take the time to make sure they were in a format you required.
the format doesn't matter. open the file in windows XP sound recorder. listen the file. click file, then save as. on the bottom click change. change the format to CCITT u-law 8 khz 8 bit mono 7kb/sec.
