IP 406DS 3.2? at the main site, 2 remote sites with a few 4610's connected to the main site via simple lan to lan tunneling. I do have a VCM8 card installed.

Topology for each site is:

Cable ISP > PIX > Pfsense > LAN

My syslog is riddled with warning missed packet lines, we've never realy had toll quality voip calls but the quality has been getting really bad lately.

I'm not sure if I'm missing a piece of hardware like a good router? or if the solution is to get some leased lines beteween the offices?
I know there has to be a solution I can impliment on my own without paying an avaya rep 4k for a network assessment.

Please help...

If you upgrade to 4.2 you can run SSA and get a better look at your VPN between the two. Or with 5.0 you get an even better view.

So this type of installation isnt unusual?

Meaning using a Lan-to-Lan tunnel between sites without leased lines should be sufficient for good call quality?

I hadnt thought about doing an upgrade...

Unusual no. Suggested no. You can't guarantee the Internet so I wouldn't rely on it for everyday business communications.

That being said we do it quite often.

FYI - Missed Packets generally means Sys-Monitor could not buffer / process received sys-monitor specific information / like tracing in time and so dis-regarded them.

Can you point me in the right direction for diagnosing the cause of the missed packets, assuming they are the symptom of the underlying problem affecting call quality.

More info need on the setup of the phones, DMP on/off, Codecs used?

Also the Cisco ASA (pix) try this.

fixup protocol h323 h225 1720
fixup protocol h323 ras 1718-1719

I wish I knew what more I needed to know, probably lots. We use H323 and I had to add the no fixup protocol lines to all the pix's to get the phones to work.

I'm not even sure what DMP stands for.

Does anyone have any suggestion for good material, recommended books to readup on troubleshooting this problem?

DMP is "Direct Media Path" this option can be found in the Avaya Manager on the extension > voip tab same as the codec settings. Don't leave the on Automatic try them on G.711 (+/-100kb/call) or use G.729 (+/-40kb/call).
