warning about vista drivers, and help with router.....

My old PC crashed so Ive switched over to a new one with Windows Vista. Smart move - dont count on it !! A lot of the usb modems dont have drivers to support it yet. My main one is a DLINK DSL-200 usb broadband modem, Ive spoken to DLINK and they are currently "working on the driver" and couldnt give me a date. The only other usb modem I have is a BT Voyager - and BT dont support these any more so won't be doing drivers at all for Vista!!!!

So I went to pcworld and theyve advised a router (no drivers needed). I picked up a Belkin wireless G router and wireless g usb adaptor from them. There isn't a cable included to connect the router (larger connection is this ethernet?) to my DLINK modem (USB) ?
Is this another cable I require, or am I better off going back and trading this router to one with a built in modem of its own ?!?

I would always recommend a router with a built in modem - ensure before buying it can do ADSL2+ and have a word with your ISP to check any compatibility issues.

I prefer routers that.

Come with a built in configurable hardware firewall.
Come with a keyword blocking list feature.
Come preconfigured with all ports on stealth mode.
Permit telnet access as well as having a web interface.
Have a connection status report.
Can log info to both a syslog server and via email.
Have upgradeable firmware.

That's for starters - I could go on.

One reason I prefer this is you avoid issues with having two DHCP servers and having to configure the modem & the router to 'see' each other and be on separate networks. If they both have 192.168.0.1 as their default IP address you are in for problems right at the start! OK - solvable problems - but who needs the hassle.

Yes, all you need is an ethernet cable. Then just follow the manual.
