At my workplace, we require network ready computers ASAP yet the comm's maintainance department is currently unavailable and we have been told to operate them in standalone whilst we wait.

As a temporary measure, I heard about a program which makes a computer into a WAP whilst the computer is still operating normally thus allowing a network ready computer to act as a gateway for the new computers.

I have scoured the web to no avail, the proposed gateway is on Win XP Pro and there don't seem to be any programs which don't require the computer to boot from a CD so taking out the functionality of that computer.

Has anybody else had the same problem? Are there any programs out there that will perform that task?
What other alternative methods are there for performing this function.

Many Thanks.

Depending on the manufacturer of the wireless cards, you can run them in ad-hoc mode (i.e. they do not require an access point, and will see each other as if cabled.)

If you then wish to share an internet connection, just install it on one of the PC's and use the Microsoft internet connection sharing tools.

This is not an ideal solution, but will get you over a short term hitch.

Just curious, why would you want to do this?

We need a way to access the network from a location which has not got hard wired access points installed.

I have been told that the cheapest fill-in would be to go wireless. I was also told that connection could be made through another computer.

I am interrested in whether this is feasible or what the alternatives are.
