I would like to use a photo grapic as a background in a project I am doing. I have photos in clip art, but I'd like to use just a tint of them. (They are too strong to use at full strength, my type isn't legible over them now.) How is this done? I have Pagemaker, Photoshop & Illustrator available. (No experience in any of these!)

Open the image in photoshop.
In the image menu, select -> ADJUST, then -> VARIATIONS.
Have fun :)

Hi Nancy,

You can put the graphic on it's own layer (in Illustrator) with a rectangle shape above it that's filled with the same color as your background and adjust the rectangle's opacity in the Transparency Palette (AI 9 only).

Hope this Helps.
