Want Record Navigation to use a field instead of numbers

Lets say I have these 3 records under their column headings:

MODEL# Description Price
MM-754 Gloves 4.45
MM-795 Scarf 2.25
MD-942 Hat 3.79

At the bottom of Access is record navigation with the left and right arrows and a space to enter something. I'd like to be able to enter MM-754 and hit (Enter) and have it go to the MM-754 record.. As opposed to the numbers that mean nothing in relation to my tables.

Please advise if this is possible in any way including add-on toys.

Thanks in advance!

I am not quite sure what your asking. But as it appears you want the box on a form that shows the record number to relate to a field being displayed on your form and use this to link to the field and not the record number.

If this is the case then I think what you want to do is impossible.
However there is a solution, make you own record navigation buttons on the bottom ( and disable the access ones) so that they are part of the form and get the button to find the next record and display in a text box the MODEL# and put an after update on the text box to go to that record on the form so that typing a value in should also work.

This is the first thread you've posted so I am not sure what your level of Access ability is. If you are not sure how to do anything I have said above, please do ask and if I am not here to help several others from this will site easily understand what I said and probably have a better solution.
(and I apoligise for my long winded, no pauses or punctuative lacking sentences, if you don't get what I said above then I'll post it in better english)

Actually I'm an access newbie so I would need some pretty detailed instructions or coding help. All I basically want is a way to jump to a record based on the Model# field. I don't even need the cursor to wind up in the model box. basically looking for a quicker way then CTRL-F'ing to get to a record. The default record navigation is useless to me in my use so that can indeed go. Can I do this just for a specific database?

Thx for the help.

Do you mean disable the record navigation in just one database then yes. You can disable it individually for each form. open the form properties and change 'record selectors' and 'navigation bars' from yes to no and this disables the default selectors.

I have gone over your problem and I don't think I know an easy way to solve it. I have done something similar but it uses a lot of code and the form doesn't link to the table. sorry. keep trying.

Would a combo box that the user can select the model # from a drop down menu which when selected would display that Model #'s information?

Thank you for any and all help,

I wouldn't want a drop down menu as my list of model #'s would be over 500. I just want to be able to enter a model # in a text box, hit enter, and have the record come on immediately for editing price. Just easier then scrolling through a table/spreadsheet with 500+ items.

Thanks all

Hope this helps

I am new to Access 2000, but have recently implemented two types of searches. I use the parameter query to search for part numbers by description and I also have a macro that I use to search for a specific number. These are set up as commands on my switchboard. Do you access your table through a switchboard/form? This may be a easy solution for you.
