HI I'm new to this forums, and I was searching a lot on this, but didn't found an answer... from some time, my wallpaper turned black, and i can't change it... in the properties of the desktop the "Wallpaper" section is dimmed. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Is your computer a member of a domain? Wallpaper is one of the settings administrator can controll by a group policy. A group policy can prevent users from changing the background colour or wallpaper. Booting to safe mode also typically causes a black desktop to appear, but you would propably know if you booted into safe mode.

nah... it's my home computer, and it's only connected thru router to the web, and no i'm not in safe mode.

Hey everyone,

Im also having the same problem. First I had a background image that was all black and in the middle said " this computer is infected" well for sure it was. I had removed several viruses and spyware and the black background was gone. Now I want to set a different background but all the display settings are dimmed. I am the admistrator, not joined to domain.
Keroloth: did you run anti virus scan and spyware scan? Try it.

yeah i did... no viruses or trojans detected... (I'm running the MKS online scanner, with the up to date virus bases so i'm pretty shure he didn't miss anything :)) and well... this happened to me a couple of days ago...

See if any of these similar stories offer you a solution.

i actually found out that when i press alt+ctrl+del the window pops up and i can see my wallpaper :) (not the task manager, the one with logout, cancel, task manager, shutdown, change password options)

but still no luck, i'll try doing some research and bump around the net...

Is this a XP or Vista machine?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
