Waht are the implications of having file and printer being annnounced on the NW as you browse it.
If a WS's has a share for files and a printer that someone could print to (if driver is loaded) what does it do to the traffic on the NW, Does it go slower because it is seen/usable?

These things work differently depending on which protocols you are using- assuming you have a Microsoft Networking setup using TCP/IP then yes there is additional traffic if you activate filesharing on a machine- for exactly the reason you said (so that it can announce it's resources)- however an incremental resource (printer, folder) 'shared out on this machine will not create any further traffic (it is the 'announcement' of the 'server' that results in traffic

An another implication is that your machine suddenly becomes unsecure! This is especially important when you are on the internet. In a networked environment where an internet connection is shared, there is most likely a firewall that will block intruders. For home users this is not always the case and having filesharing on can lead to their machine being wide open.
