I had a machine built for me and the MS mail dialogue is "enabled" on prior to the desktop loading. Can anyone advise how to diaable this irritant necessitating giving a username and password (or escaping) before the desktop load continues - without detrimentally affecting the TCP/IP parameters in Control Panel Networking ?

THank you

I am not familiar with MS mail dialogue box........
It sounds like a startup program to me .........go to

Windows Explorer....navigate in left pane to....
C:\windows\start menu\programs\.......File>New>....new folder.....right click new folder.......choose rename....type in "disabled startup"(you should now have a "disabled startup" folder in the \Programs folder along with the 'Startup folder".........In left pane...choose startup folder......from right pane drag and drop offending startup program into new "Disabled Startup" folder in left pane....

Look here........C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Start Menu\Programs

for same thing......and perform same procedure if the Offender is not found in C:\Windows\start menu\programs folder

There's other more severe ways to Kill it.......just wanted to give some (safe) alternatives
Let me know how it goes

Sorry - this was supposed to be "How to disable the "Microsoft Networking" dialogue on startup. It asks for a username and a password. An "escape" gets rid of it but it stubbornly re-appears each time the m/c is re-srarted. There's nothing in the start-up section of settings in either "Startup" or "Programs - Startup" which applies.

Any ideas please ?

Go into the Control Panel then the Network Icon. In there change the primary logon to Windows.

Hi

Thanks for the tip of Control Panel > Networking > change Primary Log-on to "Windows". Did this but the message about loggibng on still comes up prior the desk-top going live. Only now it says "Windows" Log-on "Username & Password" instead of the previous "MS Network" Username and Password.

There's nothing in Startup or Programmes > Startup which refers or can be deleted. Also nothing useful to change in MsConfig so I'm still stumped. Having had historical trouble messing around with TCP/IP settings, I'm reluctant to change anything in those parameters. Any further ideas, please?

Many thanks

When you get the Windows log on, enter a username and no password. That will be the last time you are asked.

Thanks smah, forgot that part.

Try this

Start > Seetings > Control Panel > Network

IN "the following network components are installed" BOX

Highlight "Client For Microsoft Networks"

Then on the same GUI

In the "Primary Network Logon" BOX

Select Windows Logon and click OK

The system will load drivers and you will then have to reboot.

My system (98SE) is on a small network, it removed the logon window that appears before the icons on the desktop and all loaded OK and I was still able to share and read folders from the network, however the security issues are to be considered.

Please remember this worked on my system but may not work on yours, take all the usual precautions.
