Like the tittle sez other machine is stuck in this setting. Tried the usual way of right clicking blank space and going to the settings tab, change restart and reverts back to the 640 x 480 setting. When I run or should I say attempt to run MSCONFIG it opens for a few seconds and goes back to the desk top, but was able to click on the advance tab quick enough to get a glimps at the check box for the 640 xc 480 tab and it is un-checked.

machine specs
AMD K-6 3D processor
S-3 INC.Trio 3D/2xV 1.00.28 grafics card
envision E-7.710e moniter
running win98SE 2nd edition 4.10.2222A

Im pretty sure you have a virus. Go here and run this scan.
Do a full system scan.

Once finished running that, download hijackthis from the link below. Extract to desktop or prefered folder. You will need either winzip/winrar/winace in order to unzip it. Open the program and choose do a system scan and save a logfile. Post the logfile on here. Unless your absolutely sure on what your doing dont try and fix anything for most items are legit. Once it is posted I or someone else will go through it. Hope this helps.

justjeff,
Try re-installing the drivers for your display adapter.

Right, it's most likely the video driver. 16 colors at 640x480 is the default for the generic Win95/98 driver.

Windows Millennium had basic video drivers on the Windows Installation Disk, but Windows 98/98se didn't. If you had the driver on the hard drive previously, then it may already be there for you to reinstall. If not and you'd don't have the drivers anywhere else, then read the Video card type as the computer goes through the boot process and download the driver from the internet.

How do I check and find and re-install my video drivers from my harddrive or is it easier to just go on line and search and down load from there.

Did you have higher resolutions before? If so, check your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files. Some programs will comment out some lines. Beyond that I'll have to let others give that answer.

Be aware that Microsoft is not supporting Windows 98/98se/Me any more, so no doubt there are many security vulnerabilities if your computer is exposed to the internet. Are you sure you don't have viruses, worms, etc? Have you run several of the free checkers as electronicsfreak recommended? (You should be doing that periodically anyway.) If you're not infected and MSCONFIG won't even stay running, then maybe the Windows installation is messed up.

Just a thought: when I installed Win98 on a computer with a monitor that didn't support the plug&play thingy, it defaulted to 640x480 & it couldn't be changed.

I had to install the specific monitor driver from the windoze disk before I could get it to 800x600 (yes, it's a very old monitor).

Might be worth looking to see what monitor it thinks is installed in control panel.

Instead of getting the driver from driverguide.com, I suggest you have a look at the manufacturer's website:

Also, if you don't seem to have enough info about your graphics card model number, then try using a program like Everest Home Edition or Belarc Advisor.

The monitor driver is less important. In the event where Plug & Play Monitor doesn't work, you can try "Default Monitor" or force "Super VGA 800x600 75Hz" which is a safe bet. Just remember that the most important factor here is the video card driver...

Okay here is what or where I have gotten so far with this thing. Went to the link and tried to run it. It said I needed to update my java did that and when I run the scan it just runs and runs, and this “security box” comes up or on screen except that is all I can see is the top borer the contents of the box are blacked out, so I slowly swept across till I seen the hand come on and there is only one spot and that takes me to a “more info” box again all blacked out do the same thing and it takes me to a “certification” box all blacked out. When I close them the house call just keeps running, I let it go for over 2 hours, and on the bottom status bar it has this java error something on it (cant read it all) So then I tried to run the other thing that electronics freak suggested the hi jack one and it just makes it go to a black screen and freeze up.
I went to the driver download site mainegeek suggested and downloaded that driver and think it installed not quite sure but the version numbers changed when I check the system info.
Don’t know if I told this but this is my teenage daughters machine and there is nothing new put in them same hardware and software for a long time, but the sites they go to, chat rooms, my space …makes me think that a virus is probly the culprit also so is there another scans I could try or maybe download one to a disk or cd-rom on my machine to use on theirs?

Download this antivirus, install it and run it in safe mode.

In order to access safe mode soon as you see the black prompt from turning a computer on start pressing F8 till you either hear a a beep or are brought to a black screen with options, choose safe mode from there.

Run a full system scan in safe mode. Let us know what happens.

...and afterwards, don't forget to try the site I posted once you know the exact model of your video card.

Okay got the Avast loaded, how long should it take to run? I have had it running for hours and when I come back it is usually stoped on a virus found or adware so I delete them and let it cont. but when I come back it is froze and have to re-start from the begging.
Mostly wanted to let all of you helping that I havent given up or forgoten about you, thanks for all the help and I will keep you up dated as to its progress untill I fix or pick-up and throw out nearest window thus fixing it for good.

Hm it shouldnt be freezing. Do try cdoggs suggestion as well. Go ahead and download hijackthis from the link below. Extract to desktop or prefered folder. Open the program, choose do a system scan and save a logfile. Post the logfile on here and do not attempt to fix anything yourself on this unless your absolutely sure you know what your doing for most items are legit.

Here is a log file from my computer and when I ran the avast program on this one I got back a bunch of “cant scan file entry’s” and a few “infected” ones. But on the infected ones I couldn’t do anything with, couldn’t delete move to chest or anything.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Would reccomend following Cdoggs suggestion after performing this.

Now more strange happenings, when I try to go to click on the link, type in the URL go through a serch engine to the Hijack this download page when I click to go the machine goes to a frozen screen with only background/wallpaper showing.
Also noticed somthing differnt and I thought looked a little strange. when I start in safe mode I can go to MSCONFIG and when I go to the SYS.INI file or settings there is this msg there that says somthing like **DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE!!** your system INI File was moved by somthing or the other blah blah blah
And lastly is it likely or possible for the bad machine hooked up to my machine through a netwark somehow knock my power supply out,or just coincedence?
