Ok everyone... what's the general idea here??? Good or bad??... I HAVE to go to SP4 on my MF XPe boxes because of a printing issue that MS says is only fixed in SP4 (their hotfix didn't work)

So,... is there any help here with installing sp4??

Thanks everyone!
Brandon

Hi,

First make a backup of existing partition. (i always use ghost 8 cause it support ntfs). Then install service pack 4 i know there are some bug issues but most of the problems are solved in Service Pack 3 and Feature Release 3 of Citrix XP.

Regards,

George

Here's a site listing most of the Win2000 SP4 hotfixes:
SP4 was an absolute nightmare for us...We had to immediately revert back to SP3 (and staying there).
What printing issue are you having with Win2000 SP3...do you have a KB article?

KB Article is 319370...
MetaFrame XPe-
We are on W2kSP2 (one production box is on SP3) (I know)... and we tried SP3 but did not fix the issue.
The issue is that my users are 'connecting' to printers at logon via my simple wsh script... However, when they try to print they get an "access is denied"....

Any thoughts??
We called MS for a hotfix that 'might' fix it but it didn't work... So now MS says we need to go to SP4 to fix it.
We are using HP2200 /Driver: HP2100/2200 PCL- This has been no fun!!!

Thanks,
Brandon

Two things I would think of here; first do you have a test box? Throw SP4 on it and see if that makes your problem go away; if it doesn't its an academic arguement really....

Secondly, try publishing the printers folder or giving a user access to a desktop and try adding and printing from there.

Maybe try doing the above as a domain admin, as a regular user who is an admin on the print server and as an admin on the citrix server (just add a test user to the administrators group of each server). This wouldn't be a permanant fix but might give you somwwhere to start looking.

I have not budged from SP3 because I saw all the mayhem being reported by users so I am running Win2k, SP3 & MF 1.0 FR2 SP2

Some of the problems that I experienced when some remote "admin" decided to install SP4 without telling me included published apps that would take up 2 minutes to load (on a local subnet!!!) and various printing issues. I will stick to SP3 for as long as I can.

I have a XPe farm containing 6 servers all running W2k server + SP4 an FR3. Have had the same issue. Just put the group "domain users" on every printer with "print" and "manage printer" rights. No problems since.

If someone could tell me how to lock the permissions down further I would appreciate it a lot.
I must say, I haven´t had any problems with users complaining about printing issues! Of course I know it isn´t always the best way to give everyone more rights, but it seams so as if it has to be in this case.

Cheers

Damien

Thanks to everyone!
Damien-
We have a work around... Basically we have a scheduled task to run right after reboot (we reboot nightly). The task/script will fix your problem AND you will be able to remove the "Domain Users" and lock your printers down!!! Basically, the script just opens the properties of the printer and Wha Lah!! That's it!!! Check it out:

start rundll32(space) printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /p /n\\apxfpsvr02"\atl copier"

This is just a sample line.. Just add all printers in this syntax to a .cmd or .bat file... and you will be good to go!!

Let me know how it works!

Hi Bran,

Very interesting script. But what is exactly happening after the reboot? I have run the script and it opens the properties window of the printer in the script. And then what? You change some properties somehow? You close that window again?

I would like some more explanation here :)

A maybe-future bran-script admirer,

BK

Hi there, I would be cautious about SP4 on Win2K with Citrix, I have upped my FR1 boxes with Win2K SP4 and have introduced a number of problems.

Now getting help from Microsoft for various fixes. If it is of interest, while it does help with printing problems it introduced some new ones.

Redirector taking forever when browsing to other machines. Also problem when calling applications/files from share.

some interesting links below

Hey BK-

I know, as simple as this script is- it works...
Nothing happens after reboot via this script. The only thing this script does is (like you said) it opens the properties of the specified printer! THAT'S IT!! AND it fixes whatever was preventing the end users to connect to it!! (don't ask me why!).. my helpdesk found this fix on the internet somewhere...

So, the reason I said after reboot is because we run this script after reboot so it happens before anyone logs in and attempts to connect to the printer. Oh, you have to have each of these printers on the MetaFrame in the printers folder... and run the script on the same MetaFrame w/ admin rights...

Try it out and let me know :)

Brandon

We have about 20 plus win2k servers running FR2 SP4 and we have encountered no problems if anything logons and logoffs have been faster. However we do not use the CMC for setting up printers we use scripts. Basically from what i can see from reading loads of forums its the printing that seems to be affected.
