I have a home network running win2k server and windows XP home connected through a cable router. Everything seems to work fine accept that it take a very long time for the server to connect/browse the XP machine. However the XP machine can browse the server instantly. Pinging from server to XP takes along time also. Sometimes a minute or so to connect. Any ideas? Please help.

If I understand you correctly, you are using something like a Linksys router to connect all your pc's together and share a cable internet connection?

Are you using DHCP or static internal IP addresses? If you are using DHCP what is running DHCP, your Windows 2000 server or the router?

If you do an IPCONFIG /RELEASE
then IPCONFIG /RENEW

Does it change anything?

Is your server running a static or dynamic IP?

If you give your XP machines static IP's does it change anything?

Are you running any other protocals such as IPX/SPX or netbui on any of your XP machines or the server?

Let me know.

DNS....I think you are using the ISP's DNS, which is the only way to browse the Net. You can either setup DNS on the Server and use forwarders to the ISP, or install WINS and see if that helps. If you are in a domain enviornment, then you must already have DNS.

Yes, I am using a Linksys Router to connect my computers and share an internet connection.

DHCP in enabled on the router and disabled on the server.
Both systems using dynamic I.P.'s.
I have tried using static I.P.'s on both machines with the same results. I believe I have tried all combinations of such but I may have missed something.

I have IPX/SPX installed on both systems. That was the only way to get them to communicate at all.

The DNS IP's on both systems I got from the ROUTER information that it had obtained from my ISP.

Does this all sound right? Is there a better, preferred configuration I should try?

BTW- IPCONFIG /release & renew did nothing for me.

Thank you.

Are you using Active Directory? If you are, then you need to setup DNS on one of your servers. If not, then setup WINS and put the IP of the WINS servers on the PCs

I was using active directory but I re-installed win2k yesterday and have not upgraded to it again yet. I am still having the same slow connectivity problem after the re-install. I will set up WINS on the server and hopefully that will help. (thanx)

I was not even able to get the two systems (win2k-xp) to talk at all until I installed IPX-SPX on both systems. Does that mean that is the protocol that they are using then?
