w2k server same legato hostid

hallo,
that´s one of the problem! 33 w2k server installed with legato 6.2. all of them have the same legato hostid.
i thought, that the hostid will genarated on the basis of the sid!
what´s happend?

Were your servers built using a "cloning" process, like symantec (norton) Ghost? If so they all may have the same SID, (BIG BIG problems for an NT network security wise...) Ghost comes with a utility to chaneg the SID of a nt/2k machine, but it MUST NOT be a member of a domain, as that causes all sorts of problems, so you'd have to switch it to workgroup, run the sidwalker (ghstwalk) from DOS and then re-join it to a domain if you're using one.

We had the same problem. We use Legato Networker V6.2 (W2k) and all our clients had the same host id. We did not use a cloning software. All servers were installed with an unattended setup.

During the first weeks all servers suddenly changed their host id one by another. The problem is that the licenses expire after 15 days if this happens, so you have to keep an eye on your server.

To at least force NetWorker to change the host ID, stop and restart the Networker services.

In theory, Networker uses the IP address to generate host ids. In the really old days, it used the MAC address of the network interface, but Legato got enlightened and changed this so in case your box where you have the Networker server goes AWOL, you can at least reuse the disks if the hardware is the same else.
