Good Afternoon folks,
One of our Dataserver's is doing the following:
After a reboot you click the shortcut to domain XXXX to view all the machines in the domain, it pops up in about 3 seconds and you can see all the computers in the domain.
After a half day or so you click the same thing and it takes about 1 minute to pop up. Any ideas?
WINS, DNS all looks fine. Did ping test with FQDN name and IP and works fine. Server has static IP and all DHCP setting slook good.
Thanks in advance.

Hmm, if you have WINS then you are in mixed-mode which should not give you an issue. Is your networrk hard set to a Speed/Duplex. You will get better network perfomance by setting this than by using the default of "AutoDetect"

Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network Connections
Right-mouse click the External Network Card and click "Properties"
Click the "Configure" button
Click the "Advanced" Tab
You should see an entry similar to this "Link Spped & Duplex"
Speak to your Network Engineer and find out what speed the switch/hub is that this server is connected to.
*Setting this improperly will disconnect you from the network. Also, this should be set off-hours because you will be temporarily disconnected from the network then re-connected. All users currently connected to this server will be disconnected immediately*

The NIC card is already set to 100 and Full Duplex. We tried it in Auto-detect and no change. Yes, we are currently working in Mixed-Mode which at this point we could change just haven't. Our switch is an HP 10/100 Managed switch and there are NO errors when checking performance and connectivity tests.
Thanks though for the ideas.

I've had better luck with setting NICs to autodetect with workstations and servers and on the switch port that device is connected to. I manually configure settings to 100Full if I'm connecting switches/routers/etc... to switches/routers/etc... You might try that. AND, make sure you don't have connections where one side is set to 100Full and the other side is set to auto. That will definitely cause problems. One more thing is to check your switch logs to see if you're getting errors.

HTH,

Joe Brouillette

Thanks for the above tips.
Whats sooo wierd is that if I reboot the server Network Browsing will work perfectly for about an hour or two then it goes back to bad.
Just one of those things I guess.
I will try the above.

I have noticed a latency issue with access to Win2k servers on my network. Initial access is pretty slow, but if someone is accessing a server regularly things work fine. If that user doesn't access the server for a while, the latency issue returns. When I get more time I think I'll look into this. Or maybe someone will see this statement and respond.

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

Hey Joe,
Even after I browse the network and wait for the workstations to appear I then close the explorer windows and immediately try to browse the network again I have to wait. No caching involved from what I can tell.
Cheers
