w2k server can't browse different domain

We have a nt4 domain running with one PDC and i have recently installed a new w2k server with AD in a different domain. After all seems running well in to different domains i tried to make a connection between the two domains, for that i made a bidirectional trust between the two domains. after that browsing the w2k domain from the nt4 domain ist sometimes slow but works ok, browsing the nt4 domain from w2k is very strange, sometimes i will see the nt4 shares and some seconds later the w2k server say that there is no network path anymore. after some minutes i can see the shares for some seconds again. maybe that will be important, we are running a samba server with winbind that authenticates against the nt4 domain.

any suggestions are very welcome and thanks in advance

Running DNS, WINS, DHCP? Checked the setting for them if you are? This may be oversimplistic, but try put hosts and lmhosts files in and see what happens. Can't hurt and doesn't take long. Glen A. Johnson

Thanks for your answer Glen,

yes I am running DNS but it runs on a linux box. the w2k-server knows the nameserver. I don't run WINS or DHCP - i don't like them that much :) i rather do it by myself, this way I "normaly" :) know what happens. as far as i have understood hosts and lmhosts do nearly the same, one for the lanmanager and one for the dns part. i thought that i don't need this files because i gave the network interface to know the ip address (not the canonical name) of the nameserver. But if it is neccessary i will do fill up this files to get them playing together :). what do i have to write in this files, the whole network layout or only the main parts from the dns point of view (DNS-Server, PDC, BDC, DC). Is it that w2k can't play with linux DNS but only with its own DNS? I can't believe that. What is the reason that nt4 works well and w2k doesn't do the job. The whole networks runs TCP/IP no other protocoll is installed. Do i need something like netbeui :-(

thanks in advance

Michael

You don't need hosts or lmhosts, but if you have
1)Network congestion or
2)Incorrect hosts or lmhosts files, this could be causing your problem. Hosts are
ipaddress servername.domainname.com #Name

lmhosts are
ipaddress servername #Name

I like them, but they have to be current. If your servername or IP changes, could cause problems. Especially if you get dns from an isp, and you change dns servers so the dns doesn't get changed in the hosts file. TCP/IP will be using one dns number, and hosts file will be using another. Glen A.
