My boss brought in his pc that crashed this weekend. When it boots up it will show the w2k pro screen then flashes the blue screen of death with an error message but it is then immediately tries to restart so fast that it can not be read! When trying to boot in safe mode it will show a message "press esc to stop SPTD.SYS" from loading. Regardless of how and what I try the pc will try to load w2k pro normally, flash the error message for 1/2 second, and restart. What can I do to hold the blue error screen message or to find out what the problem is? Thanks in advance for the help!

Daemon Tools was installed.

1. Boot in safe mode and press ESC key when you see on bottom line of display:
"Press ESC to cancel loading SPTD.sys". This will abort loading of SPTD layer.

2. Open registry editor (run regedit) and browse to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sptd
Change the value "Start" (DWORD) to 4 (i.e. disabled).

3. Reboot again in normal mode and check if your issue is solved.

Go here:
Download sptdinst.exe for your OS version to C:\.
Then Start, Run and execute C:\sptdinst remove
Reboot to complete de-installation.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that even though I can hit F8 to boot in safe mode and get to the hit escape prompt and when I hit escape it immediately tries to boot up normally then after seeing the w2k pro screen I get the blue screen with the error message for half a second and then it does a restart over again all by itself.

You have to be quicker.

In the alternative, make a Bart PE disk and use its registry editor to make the change:

This disk is fine for Win2k.

Man, I'm striking out all over. No matter how fast I hit the esc button it still tries to boot up normally. I downloaded the Bart disc but it tells me that my windows version is too old, that it should be XP or 2003 Server. Any other thoughts?

Thanks for the recovery console tip. I was able to get in and disable sptd and the prompt went away when trying to boot in safe mode but it is still trying to boot normally and restart on its own. It looks like the blue screen error message says:stop c00000218 but I can't tell for sure.

0xC0000218: UNKNOWN_HARD_ERROR

A necessary Registry hive file couldn’t be loaded. The file may be corrupt or missing (requiring either an Emergency Repair Disk or a Windows reinstallation). The Registry files may have been corrupted because of hard disk corruption or some other hardware problem. A driver may have corrupted the Registry data while loading into memory, or the memory where the Registry is loading may have a parity error (turn off the external cache and check the physical RAM).
