Hi,

When I tried to print from Excel 2000 on a workstation, I got an error message saying the cause of the error could be one of 3 things: lack of system memory, bad connection to the printer, or problem with the printer.
I can ping the printer, the printer works fine because other users can print to it and system memory is fine.

The strange thing is that I can print to the same printer if I connect to it as a network printer. But as a local printer, this error message pops up.

The local spooler is running, so I can`t see what the problem is..... what could I be missing

Any info much appreciated.
Danny

BTW. our network server is WIN NT4.0 but our workstations are W2k.

This is Local to what? 2k or nt4?

Is the lpt port activated or disabled in bios?

We had a problem with our copier/printer. We tried installing it as a network printer but the server (2K svr.) wouldn't let us. We ended up installing it as a peer-to-peer printer only. So, out of the 23 computers we have only 3 (win98) can print to it.

<grin>Which means less traffic in to my office.</grin>

Maybe that's the same setup you have?

Hi MiggyD,

Thanks for the reply. When I connect to the printer throught the W2k printer wizard, I choose to connect as local printer, then create a TCPIP port.

But I also connected to the printer choosing as a network printer.

So the strange thing is, if I print using the network connection, no problem, but if I use the local connection, the errors appear. So I think the problem is to do with the machine and maybe the OS (W2k)....

I have set this up on my win2k with no issue. When you go to make the local port make sure the box is unchecked automatically detect my printer. When you put in the port name I assume you put in the ip address. If this local standard ip printer is setup already make sure that the everyone group has access to print to it. Go to the properties of the local printer and under security make sure appropriate settings are applied.
