We are testing several W2K pc's and seem to have found a consistant problem. After an amount of time (hours to days, it varies) we can no longer get internal servers by tcp name lookup. If we ping the server "domino" (which normaly works ok and still works for all NT and 95 machines) it will not return an address, however if we ping "domino.stpetes.org" it works fine. The only fix so far, seems to be to re-boot the pc then things work great for a while. I have the correct DNS suffex entered in the W2K machines and when you look up the properties, it is still there. This occurs on both DHCP served and static IP addressed machines. The hosts file fix that I have seen is not an option, that is why we have a DNS server and a backup DNS server, don't want to have to change host files on 800 pc's every time we change a server.

Do you not use WINS (Thats what it is for)? DNS resolves web addresses to IP addresses, Like domino.stpetes.org to x.x.x.x
WINS resolves Computer names to IP addresses, like domino to x.x.x.x

You can use DNS for teh first but as you have noticed it is unreliable. I have herd others say they never have a problem with it. I have always had a problem. Thats why there is WINS. Thanks for the info, however the domino server and the other servers that we cannot access are not Microsoft products, therefor cannot be seen by WINS. I do use WINS along with the DNS server. Again, this only occurs with W2k and not with our NT, 95, 98, ME, AS400, or Linux clients, so I think it probably is some kind a bug, however I have been wrong once or twice this morning already. Thanks for the help, it is appreciated.

I have been wron many times before as well. As I always say, If you are not wrong from time to time then you are not a good tech! Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

I have been experiencing something very very similar. Again it only happens on windows 2000 machines.

If there is a fix, please let me know.

Thanks,

Dan
