Here is my problem.

I have a w2k server and two windows xp desktops. The internal LAN works fine and the w2k server is acting as the dhcp and the dns server and both desktops pick up IP address ok. I also have a Alcatel 4 port ethernet router which is connected to a laptop. I was going to introduce this to my network as some kind of gateway. The issue is the router acts as a dhcp server and a dns server. The problem is I only want the w2k server to act as a dhcp and dns server. When I turn dhcp and dns off on my router I am unable to connect to the internet also I am unable to gain access to the router to switch it back on.

please help

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

I'm going to be doing a lot of guessing here but I think you need to do a couple of things to make this work (based on some assumptions about the router you have).

1) Before you turn off its DHCP/DNS services, you will need to assign it a Static IP address in you network. I'm assuming there is the capability within this router to do this.

2) The static IP from your router needs to then appear within your W2K DNS record. You will also need to designate this IP address as the Gateway for your network in your configuration on both your server and workstations.

That is about as specific as I can be, since I don't know any specifics on your router.
