VTOC error with WD 200Gb disk on Ultra 10

I've been trying to get my Sun Ultra 10 to see an internal 200Gb
Western Digital IDE disk drive. Sun tried and couldn't help (after
upgrading the EEPROM), and Western Digital flat-out said "we don't
support Linux or Solaris".

I've tried to muck around with the format.dat:

...guess due to this error, the changes don't take effect, because when I go back
into format, I have a half-Gig drive again

Anyone know how (or if) I can fix this problem?

I am having the same problem with a Maxtor drive. Have you managed to get any further with this item?

I haven't gotten any further with this. I've gotten
responses on comp.solaris.admin that say that
Ultra 10s have no support for extended LBA addressing,
and therefore can't handle disks larger than 128 Gb.

I would be happy with it seeing 128 Gb, but I can't
even get that to work. This is strange when my generic
5-year-old Windows Me machine at home handled a new
80 Gb drive with no problem - am I missing something
here?

If you look in the online Sun Handbook, you will not see an internal replacement drive above 20gb. You can install another disk in the system, or all the external storage you like after installing a SCSI card. The reason the Ultra 5/10's were so cheap is they didn't have onboard SCSI.
