installed the latest NAV server and deployed the NAV client on the workstations. In NAV 7, you would open the system center and change a setting in the NAV server group. How do you make the VPTRAY icon visible with NAV 8.x?

Thanks

P.S. The VPTray executable is loaded, the icon disappears seconds after it loads though. I believe this is the standard but I prefer to have it visible.

I forgot to mention this is only if I install as managed client. I'd prefer not to have to go to every workstation if possible.

This should work for you (and all the managed clients)...

Open Symantec System Center Console

Unlock the server group you want to manage and then Right Click on the group. Select All Tasks/Symantec Antivirus/Client Administrator Only Options. On the General Tab, check "Show Symantec Antivirus Icon on Desktop"

Thanks - I hate to sound stupid but I saw that on the web but I don't see a server group under the center. That page on the web was referring to NAV 7.1 or 7.6 (can't remember). Are you using 8.1?

OUTCATS, thanks but I'm trying to avoid going to each client to make the registry change. Were you able to make the previous mod using the Symantec System Center Console for 8.0? I'm just not sure of what group they want you to click on, since I don't see any groups. Maybe I need to set one up?

Are you runing NAVCE? If so, which version. The change I am mentioning above does not require you to visit every workstation, just to make a change to the main server which is managing all of the workstations.

Outcats, I'm running CE version 8.6 which includes 8.1 server. You mentioned to ways to do it as far as I can see, going to the clients and making a registry change (or is that on the server?) and the other is making a change using the Center Console. I was trying to use the Center Console method, there is a write up at Symantec (that refers to 7.6) on that but I couldn't find any server group in mine. I wasn't sure if it was because I needed to define one or if it wasn't there in 8.1 or if I'm just blind/stupid. It could easily be the last but I'm hoping against odds that it was a feature somewhere else. Thanks for helping out.

If all of your clients are "managed", then the first part of the link I pasted above will work. I believe the most recent version out for the workstations and servers is Corporate Edition 8.1. So if you have something installed differently than a 8.0 or 8.1, it might not work.

But when I open up the System Center Console this is what I see on the left side:

Console Root (folder)
Symantec System Center
System Hierarchy
Symantec Antivirus 1 (folder)

To see my groups/servers I have to Right Click on the "Symantec Antivirus 1(folder) and then select "Unlock Server Group", then this is what it looks like:

Symantec System Center
System Hierarchy
Symantec Antivirus 1 (folder)
Groups (folder)
PS300

PS300 is my primary server and is the server I can manage all my clients through.

Let me know how your system compares to mine.

Thanks so much for this, I'll give it a try at work later today.

If you have NAV for exchange 3.0, have you figured out blocking SPAM? I set up rules but so far I haven't blocked any spam with viagra any place in the subject. I heard you have to have a certain e-mail size for this to work. I just registered so hopefully they can answer my questions when I get to work.

Thanks again.

Thank you for spelling it out for me, all I needed to do was unlock the group but didn't realize it.

Thanks!

Boed,
we have the same problem with the managed 8.1 version clients. What service pack are you using? If you click on the NAV in the start/programs/NAV client under the view, under the file system ( first selection) it will give you the status. It should still show that it communicates with your managed server. There is something weird. It works but I agree you want that extra security. Let me know if you find anything. I will do the same.

MCSereed,

Outcats described the solution well. I just forgot to unlock the server at the server interface, not on the desktop.

Hi, I hae SAV 8.1 client. I don't see the vptray icon on taskbar. Without going to SSC can I get the icon on taskbar???

shatala, I believe if you search, there is a registry entry that you can change at the workstation level.
