I have a customer that wants to VPN OUT of a DSLPipe DSL-HS 2.3 MB. At the moment, they are using NAT and the router gets its IP address by DHCP. What I would like to know is, can the pipe be set to VPN out without first being confiured with a Static IP address? I would like to get an answer prior to talking to the local provider because they may not know the answer and just say no. If someone knows the procedure, please enlighten me.

Thanks,

Ktech

The answer depends on the protocol that your customer is using. If IPSec, then this will not work on a DSLPipe running NAT as the DSLPipe has no IPSec passthrough feature. If PPTP, then this can work only if the DSLPipe side is the client. If he is the server side then he will definitely need a static IP, but a client can have a dynamic IP. Check on the DSLPipe also for a parameter called "Tunnel server". This is in the Ethernet > NAT menu. This parameter, in conjunction with static map for TCP 1723, is specifically for allowing PPTP passthrough (specifically GRE 47). I am not totally sure if this parameter is available on the DSLPipes. Your customer may have to upgrade to the latest software version first. If after upgrading to the latest software he still does not have the tunnel server parameter then he cannot use PPTP either.

Thanks L.Guy

I'll check that out and let you know how it ends up.
