ok, I'm finally going to post the question...

can you set up a vpn using comcast? I've done some searching and haven't come up with much. I talked to comcast and they said no. but it is incredibly had for me to believe that no one has managed to do this. their pro package will give you 5 "sticky ips" but they will change eventually.

I have heard that it's possible, but don't know any details. all I'm trying to do is reach a mapped drive. below is what I have:

win2k server
winxp pro
Linksys vpn on each end
both have comcast

thanks

It'll occasionally get ugly when the IP changes, but it can be done. It violates comcursed's usage policy however.

If you run into problems, make sure you've updated the firmware on both Linksys boxes. They often ship with buggy firmware that mangles VPN connetions, but they're good about fixing it. Check their website.

Oh, and about violating their policy -- I know they won't officially "support" it (meaning you're on your own) but I don't remember any strict prohibition. I'm a comcast user and I've used VPN on occasion.

I am a comcast customer and use VPN all the time, my IP leases usually last 6 months if the modem doesn't go off-line for more than 5 minutes. There is a little tool I use called DNS2GO and it basically gives you a Domain address with whatever ip you have. It updates the IP every 5 minutes or so. This way I point or ping this domain name to get the current IP.

Hope this helps.

yeah go to DynDns.org there are many useful tools you'll find there. You can, just like newnetadmin said install a client that will update your IP that points to a DNS name. The client I have checks for differences every minute, and if a change is detected then it updates.
