I am having a problem regarding VPN access (not Cisco, MS VPN Client). I am setting up a user (of which I set up about 20 others the same way without this problem) using the MS VPN client. However, when I am done setting it up, it places the connection in the Dial-up option in the Network Connections window and attempts to use the internal modem to dial-up the VPN connection. If I go into the properties of the connection,, in the Connect Using:" box, the modem is obviously listed. Of course, I do not want to use the modem but rather the existing connection. Anyone have a similar problem? I started looking to see if there's a separate Windows Installation Component that appears in Add/Remove section in case this machine, for some reason, didn't install the option but there isn't one. MY understanding is XP automatically installs the MS VPN client.

Thoughts?

what is your process of creating the vpn? you're saying in the step after you choose "connect to my workplace," when it asks you to choose between dial up and VPN, you choose vpn, and yet it still picks dial-up for you? do you get prompted for an ip address or dns name? what phone number does the strangely created dial-up connection think it should dial?

JCurtiss - when I create the VPN, it places it in a section called Dial-Up Options in the Network Connection Window. If you have a VPN already created, go to Start-->My Computer-->My Network Places-->View Network Connections. You should see your VPN in the Virtual Private Network portion, NOT in the Dial-Up Options portion.

To answer your question of "when it asks you to choose between dial up and VPN, you choose vpn, and yet it still picks dial-up for you?" the answer is Yes, it tries to dial out. Of course, because xxx.xxx.xxx.xx isn't a phone number but an IP address, it fails. So, it tries to dial the IP address I entered when creating a VPN.

Hi bobhoop. Did you ever get this problem resolved? I am currently having the same issue.
