hi, the question is can I use windows 98 as a vpn server or do I need special software for that ? I know that windows 98 comes with vpn client features, but as a server?
Thanks, R

Thanks for the info.
What would be a cost effective 3rd party software to do the job? And can I connect to it with the windows 98 vpn client?
Thank you for the help,
R

Why not using Linux ? it's free and very strong solution !

And the Internet communauty will help you just ask what you havn't understand.

give it a try you will not regret it ;)

see this URL

hope that will help

Im very linux sympathetic!
unfortunately, I have to install the server on a windows 98 platform!
And I am checking for a effective and inexpensive solution!
Thanks for any suggestions!

you tell effective and inexpensive solution !!!
linux solution is free what more inexpensive than that ??!!!

And just a suggestion throw w98 away it's not coded for networking nor havy usage of ressources.

good luck

I have to concur with haneo, 98 is not a good way to go. Third party or not. Even if you manage to get it working, it will probably never work well.
Why must you use 98? Format it and reload linux. Linux is easy to set up, it's free, and it can run better on a "low performance" machine than Windows....

I totally agree with haneo and mattwray. Linux as a VPN endpoint using FreeS/WAN is the way to go if you are using lower end hardware. Dedicate the Linux VPN machine to just that purpose, harden it, and it'll be ideal for your needs. You can even set up two Linux VPN servers, one on each end, to connect 2 networks securely over the internet.

Thanks for all the support.
The problem is I have to come up with a vpn solution for a client who runs win 98 and is not considering to give it up... but in that case I will have to find another workaround.
Perhaps ssh will do the trick..
Thanks anyway for the help.
