We have a company that is supposed to be dialing into our network via VPN and backing up our data remotely. How can I tell if they are doing it properly, or at all through looking at our server? The reason I ask is because they are not answering our phone calls.

Thanks a lot.

Hi,
1. Buy your own tape backup or dvd-rw and do your own backup
2. Terminate the contract with that company. If they don't answer the phone how are you going to restore your data?

I agree. The point of my trying to find out if they are doing it is so that I can present that to management, so we can move on. Is it possible to see if it is happening?

At least turn if you turn On security auditing for those folder & user that that use to backup you will know if they accessing your server or not, but how do you verify if the backup data is good?

Well, the setup that he (the backup guy) has here is a server 2000 machine (not promoted) which it's only function is to do a nightly backup of the applications drive from the main DC. I guess from there, he is VPN-ing in to back that up. Now, we had a power outage last week and the backup pc that he set up was never turned back on. We did not recive a call from him, or any notification that the backups were not working. I also asked him for a file from a few weeks ago last month and got no response. I really want to just prove that he is not even backing up the data, which I suspect is the case. RRAS is not enabled on any of our servers. Is that an indication that it is not happening? We are looking into another offsite backup solution right now. I will try the security auditing. I assume that I should set it up on the backup server that he set up?

Thanks again.
