VPN problem 1

I have a VPN set-up via a Broadband connection to connect intop my office network from home.
The VPN registers me on the network and I can browse the office network with no problems.
However when the VPN is connected, I am unable to connect to the internet via Explorer....I keep getting the web-site unavailable notice as you do when there is no modem connection.

Does anybody have any ideas about which setting may be causing this?

In the connection properties for the VPN (on the client machine), go to Networking tab, get Properties for TCP/IP, click on advanced button, and uncheck "use default gateway on remote network".

One other thing....would this help in making a VPN connection using a router?
I recently tried to install a router for my Broadband connection but the VPN would not let me browse the office network. I uninstalled it and went back to my ADSL modem, which worked fine.

No. Likely for the router a "port forward" is necessary for the VPN software.

. See if the router has a setting for "PPTP passthru" and "IPSEC passthru", and enable them in the router setup if found;

. PPTP traffic uses TCP port 1723 to create and maintain the connection and IP protocol 47 to send data. L2TP/IPSec traffic uses UDP ports 500 and 4500 to create and maintain the connection and IP protocol 50 to send data. Configure your router to allow these types of traffic to and from your VPN server. It is often easiest to assign your VPN workstation a "static" IP rather than a DHCP determined one. See your router documentation.

. Remember to open TCP port 1723 to PPTP traffic, and UDP ports 500 and 4500 in your firewall as well.
