VPN over aDSL between Proxy Servers

I am wondering if I can establish a Virtual Private Network over aDSL. The process will be in this order for a replication of data between SQL Servers over Microsoft networks. SQL Server -&gt; Proxy Server -&gt; aDSL-384k min. -&gt; (internet) -&gt; aDSL-384k min. -&gt; Proxy Server -&gt; SQL Server -- via Microsoft PPTP Protocol. Is it unsecure, unreliable.... reliable, secure... any ideas? AND can I have a VPN and also proxy internet access to the intranet simultaneously?<br>

From what I understand, companies who handle this FOR you only use THEIR own equipment and THEIR own Proprietary ISP's etc... so why can't I do this MYSELF?! I have a good deal on an ISP and already have one Proxy set up on it. (and if you've the time- HOW do i do it. there's not much out there on this specific subject)<br>

Used an illegal char and got cut off. What I was saying was is setup a test system in your home/office with a server and client and (2) phone lines. Install the VPN per MS instructions. See if works. If you can get this to work, than you should be on your way. Let me know if this is pointing you in the right direction.<br>

Yes but will it work over aDSL... I almost got it to work-- logged in (I think) but no activity-- a phone dial-up to aDSL. But has this Scenario been replicated-- should I pursue? From what I hear no one has actually set up a VPN via Microsoft PPTP.<br>

Been all over Microsoft's site but I can only find a VPN using a Dial-up.<br>

Should work no matter what you are using for connectivity (i.e., POTS, DSL). Point-to-Point-Tunneling-Protocol, according to Microsoft, should be able to support 50 concurrent connections. Let's try for just one first.<br>

Give their solution a try per the link above in my reply yesterday. See if that works. If not, I would punt and go with a 3rd party solution. You really can die trying to get an allegedly easy Microsoft solution to work. You need to ask yourself and your company what is worth more; the time to get Microsoft working or the expense of just going with another solution. VPN can be very expensive as it is so pure secure through the public Internet and can, justly so, replace out a WAN using the internet. Direct connectivity alone for a 6-state 6-office WAN can run 500K annual; (that is 24x7). <br>

Determine what you want to use the VPN for and back your needed solution into that; nothing more or less. That will save tons of money and time. Let me know how it goes.<br>

Help... A client installed a dsl at her house and now she cannot vpn in.. She had no problems using a modem and a simple isp account...
she has 2000 pro. OS and we have a 2000 server...

any ideas or links I can go to for help..

If the dsl is a modem than it will work. If it is a router
say a lucent cellpipe 50A it will not. However I have seen VPN over a router using cisco vpn 3000. I am not sure of its config, but I did see it work at a customer site.

She is using a LinkSys Router.. Could this be the cause of the vpn problem....

I am just about to move to an aDSL connection at home and wanted to VPN into our office network but after discussing this with my telecoms company we have found that aDSL causes problems with VPN because of the DSLAM at the telecoms end which I have been told performs a sort of one way NAT, as you can imagine this causes VPN no end of problems. If you have got this working then I guess it's all down to you guys using a different provider to me (heck, I'm on the Isle of Man which currently has less that 20 subscribers to aDSL !!!). Perhaps this page may be of use to people in this forum ...

I have had ADSL by two different suppliers, one with an internal bus modem, the second one with an external USB modem. The connections were live (not dial-up). They worked great into my company's VPN (dial-up).

Each of those suppliers were here-today-gone-tomorrow, so I am with a third one. I did not do my homework well ... their external adsl usb modem connects fine, but to log onto their server I have to use a dial up! VOILA' ... now my VPN to my company will not work.

What is the possibility of setting up VPN with PPTP? I am not technical, so please, if you know how, tell me in layman's terms. THANX!!

What type of equipment did the third isp give you to use? Is it possible to install one of the 2 original that worked before. PPTP should not be affected through a dsl modem.

I've been trying this one for days. At work, I was asked to set up a VPN so traveling employees could access company resources from out of state. We have DSL at work and for our firewall, a WatchGuard Firebox II is in place. I don't have a lot of experience with this Firebox but when I first started working here I had to read all of the manuel and try to figure out how to reset the password and configure it. The Firebox has a built in pptp vpn setup and I should be able to VPN with an MS Client. The manuels had all of the instructions how to set it up, which I followed to the letter (even taking a break to get a glass of water). I tested this out from home (I also have DSL). I can connect to the firebox, checks my user name and password, and after a little while it tells me that everything is fine. I try to ping my server at work, and it responds nicely. Next, I try to net use a share, no dice. I can't browse a thing. We have a mail server sitting in the office network as well. I decide to ping that, which responds nicely. Now, I try to connect to the mail server with a mail client. It times out. No activity through the connection. I have searched and searched for an explination. I haven't found one yet. Is this something about DSL? Or is it something I may have missed? Or could it be something I have no control over? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.
