VPN & Outllok Issues

Hi:


My setup is as follows.

I have a Exchange server sitting in a remote location connected through SMC 2804WBRP-G to Pacific Bell DSL connection. My Server IP address is fixed to 192.168.2.xxx.

My client is at a different location on WAN again connected through SMC2804WBRP-G to COMCAST broadband. I use Microsoft VPN connection to connect to my server. My outlook is configured to the exchange server directly so I check my mail in the server itself rather than pulling it to my client.

I have two problems.


a) When I connect to my server through VPN, it gets connected. But when I start Outlook, it takes about 3 minutes to show my mail. Where as if I take my laptop to my friends house and connect to my server and start outlook, it takes just 20 seconds to show my mail. Please note he also has SMC router.


b.) The second problem is when I switched over to Verizon FIOS ( Fiber optic cable connection for broadband ), I can connect to my server through VPN but can not check my mail on outlook as it keep saying outlook disconnected ( at the right side bottom of the monitor ). Again if I take my laptop to my friend’s place who has Verizon FIOS and SMC router, every thing works fine.

So, in (a) I have timing problem with Comcast and (b) the connectivity problem. Can anyone please help me out???

Nishrags, I just want to confirm 1 thing. When you go to your friends house, are you still using a VPN to connect to your server?

I have seen this issue with the Cisco VPN client. For some ISP providers, the standard TCP connection doesnt allow Outlook to connect properly over the tunnel. We got around this issue by changing the tunnel encapsulation to UDP and things seemed to work just fine. I don't know if the Microsoft VPN client can switch to UDP.

well, that's the thing. I dont think you can. I know how to do it with the Cisco client.

Ms uses UDP, try to change to tcp or the mtu

Thanks for your reply. My problem is it takes time. The article u have mentioned talks about some login problem. do u still think i should do this change? Also if I have to change the MTU, where do I change it ?. On the router, only if I choose PPOE, I get the option to change the MTU, where as mine is Dynamic IP address by the Cable cpmpany. SO I don';t get to change the MTU on the router.

I had the same problem with users which take air canada, Whenever the connect via vpn from the airport (only from air canada lounge), they could access anything but Outlook doesn't work.
If the connect from other places is OK, they could use their Outlook

Edit your HOSTS file in your System32 directory. You need to add your exchange server's name and its private IP address to it, run ipconfig /flushdns, establih VPN connection and try to ping Exchange by name, see if it resolves properly and gives you reply. This should fix your peoblem provided the VPN is working correctly.

Thanks for your message. Couple of things, When I use my LAptop from my friends place, how does it work without my server name in the Hosts file?. Any way I added to my HOSTS file, still same problem. I have tried everything , nothing solves the provblem. Where as if I go to my froends place, everything works without me doing anything ion my laptop . The only diffrence is the SMC router he has is a diffrent model than mine.
