I dont think its built into XP. You can prob make a connection to it but you will not be able to use it as a gateway to your LAN. If you just need to connect to send files you can use the built in remote desktop option.
all i really want to do is simulate a LAN over the internet for the purposes of playing a multiplayer game that (i believe) uses NetBIOS to locate computers on the LAN. honestly, i don't even know for sure if a VPN is what i need/want for this (hence why i'm a newbie)
Ahh .. cool thats what got me into networking was gameing and trying to setup a network to play Warcraft with my roommate. What game are you trying to setup? Most new multiplayer games have the abilty to play over the internet using TCP/IP.
actually, it's warcraft that i want to play. i don't like using battle.net, so i wanted to see if a VPN would do the trick. even if it won't work for the game, how would i go about setting up a VPN with xp pro?
I just took a look at my Warcraft CD and I dont think you can play it across the net without using B net. On a lan you can but it uses IPX. I dont think playing over a VPN would work since your VPN uses TCP/IP I dont think IPX will route over your TCP/IP VPN.
hmmm..according to the faq on blizzard's site, LAN play is done with TCP/IP. well, like i said, even if i can't play the game using a VPN, how would i go about setting up a VPN anyway? what other equipment would i need or can it be done strictly with software?
