VPN hangs while connecting

I have a windows 2000 client that I cannot get to establish a VPN connection. I'm using the windows VPN setup which works great on every other PC. When I enter the user and password it just sits there displaying "connecting".
I have tried everything that I can think of. Has anyone encountered this problem? BTW this machine was originally using the Cisco VPN client which was removed.

Just a quick question, what are you actually trying to connect your VPN too?

Another XP box, a windows RRAS server??
