VPN -> Terminal Services Copy & Paste

Hi,

I have SBS2K with RRAS and ISA server (setup with VPN), I can connect to the VPN without problems, and then I can connect to the server via Terminal Services (from my home machine using Remote Desktop). The problem I have is that I can't copy & paste files from the remote machine to the local machine.

I have my router setup to allow incoming VPN connections (port 1723), do I need to open any other ports in order to copy & paste?

I don't believe you will ever be able to copy and paste documents or files from the remote machine to the local machine using Terminal Services, as this is not supported. However, what you should be able to do is copy the text from an open document on the Terminal Server to a blank document on the local machine.

You need to setup a share on your local machine. Then map to that share while you are in your TS session. You will then be able to copy and paste back and forth.

A. Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services sessions let you copy, cut, and paste text and graphics between client and server sessions. File Copy is an extension to Terminal Services that lets you also use copy, cut, and paste to transfer files and folders between client and server sessions. Using File Copy, you can:

Copy, cut, and paste multiple files and directories
Copy, cut, and paste on Windows 32-bit or 16-bit clients

To use File Copy, perform the following steps on the server:

Install the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit.
Go to

and click "Download this tool" to download file rdpclip_hotfix.exe.
Start regedt32.exe.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\AddIns\Clip Redirector.
Double-click the Name value.
Change the RDPCLIP entry to FXRDPCLP.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd.
Double-click the Startup Programs value.
Change the RDPCLIP entry to FXRDPCLP (if you have installed Drive Share, change the entry to FXRDPCLP,DRMAPSRV).
Rename the new rdpclip.exe file (located in the Resource Kit folder) to fxrdpclp.exe, and then copy the file to the %systemroot%\System32 folder.
Copy the fxfr.dll file (located in the Resource Kit folder) to the %systemroot%\System32 folder.
Restart the computer.

On the clients, perform the following steps:

Copy the 32-bit fxfr.dll file to the Program Files\Terminal Services Client folder.
Rename the rdpdr.dll file in the Program Files\Terminal Services Client folder to rdpdr.pss.
Copy the 32-bit rdpdr.dll file to the Program Files\Terminal Services Client folder.

To use File Copy, simply select the desired file or files on the client or Terminal Services session, press Ctrl+C, then paste into the Terminal Services or client session.

You shouldn't need to open any ports if you are communicating through the VPN tunnel.
