Is it necessary to have an HTTP or FTP server for the VPN files? I've tried loading the files onto the phones by putting them onto the embedded memory card on the IPO 500, setting the HTTP and FTP server IP address as the IPO's IP address, and following the steps by entering a sequence of keys on the dial-pad for the phone to look for the files. Am I missing something? or is it simply that I need to have an actual HTTP or FTP server?

No HTTP/FTP server needed but a good BP will do the job.

Have a look here;

Don't know what BP is, and this link is only a broad destination of where I've already been doing research. Anyone else?

F'd-up way to respond to a post that's here for support.

slim187m, before you get too hot under the collar, remember that these forums are here for "professionals" to post issues and get help with those issues. They are not here for people who are untrained to avoid paying for training or support contracts.
BP stands for Business Partner, someone who has invested time, money and a lot of hard work to gain the qualifications/certifications required to call themselves an Avaya Businmess Partner.

Someone else would/will possibly step in and help if Bas didn't feel like it but stamping your feet isn't going to encourage anyone :)

How can I forget these forums are here for pro's; I've been helped here before; besides I am a "BP," I don't go around talking much in acronyms, it's annoying. I'm just starting out as an Avaya guy, gimme a break...

For a 5610 you need a TFTP server (not FTP) to send the appropiate VPN files to the phone. You can use the embedded card on the IP500 to do this, sounds like you set the IP office to be the TFTP server which is fine.

On the phone you'll need to set the group ID to 876, this will tell the 5610 to load up the VPN bin files on the next reboot of the phone. All relevant bin and 46xx files need to be available on the embedded card in the IP500.

After successfully loading the VPN bin files to the 5610, you can program the 5610 VPN settings. More info in the knowledgebase, and tech tips. :)

I have a good tip.

Search for the folder "bin" on the admin cd and read the "read ne first" doc.
Setting up a VPN phone for the first time will be trial and error.
If you are a BP then you need to learn alot but you will in time.

Appreciate the last two posts fellas. Unfortunately I've gone through the very process (both described) several times, it's making me mental.
A lot to learn sure is right. I've soaked-up quite a bit of knowledge in the last month or so, and trying to cram it all in to keep it there will be the challenge. I'm dedicated, just a long-time Nortel guy trying to get back on his feet

A 56xx uses http too if that is better for you.

OK here is a better link;

-Let the Manager be the TFTP server.
-You need a Remote VPN licence.
-Add the SET SMBLIC 1 in the 46vpnsettings.txt file otherwise it will only run for 180 days.

Here are 5 links for different VPN routers:

Anything else?

Now we're talkin Bas; I've already gone through that other stuff, but here's something I haven't seen before:

-Add the SET SMBLIC 1 in the 46vpnsettings.txt file otherwise it will only run for 180 days.

I have never even heard of a "SET SMBLIC." That's a license? I was never offered that from our distributer, even though I mentioned some of our IP Phones were going to be used with the VPN software. is this only useable without that "license" for 180 days from the day the VPN software is installed on the phone?
The phone I'm trying to install the software on is a 5610. It seems that after hitting the sequence of buttons (MUTE 47687#
876##
MUTE 73738#*#)
to modify the Group to 876, that the File Server IP Address 0's out which just may be because I have the Memory Card as the Phone File Server. However I do have all the correct files in the Memory Card as well as with Manager. They are all the default files + all the vpn files from the Admin 5.0(18) disc. And yes the 46xxupgrade.scr file already has the following code:
IF $GROUP SEQ 876 GOTO DEFVPN
GOTO NOVPN
# DEFVPN
GET 46xxvpn.scr
# NOVPN
Does this code need to be at the absolute beginning? because it's not. Besides, where exactly is the beginning? Before all the asterisks? do I need to add asterisks?

Yes the 46xxupgrade.scr has the correct extension;
It's as if the phone is still only using what it already has downloaded to it and not looking for the vpn files. when reset, it just comes back up as a plain registered phone. I even try hitting the sequence of buttons:
MUTE 876663#
to see if i can modify the VPN settings...

Am I possibly reseting the phone wrong? Is there even a way to delete any of the existing firmware on these phones?
Come on I'm squirmin' guys

Oh yes and where can I find the IPOffice_56xx_46xx_vpn.zip file?

OK...After several hours of agony...I must have been missing some files.
I went through the entire stack of default files in the Manager folder and added every single one to the Memory Card. voila...now I just have to find out all of which ones are needed, for personal knowledge.

So it works now ?
The "SET SMBLIC 1" is only needed when you use a 4600 instead of a 5600 phone.
