I have a Windows 98 machine that I am trying to set up Access Manager and Nortel VPN Client. Access Manager connects fine, however, VPN fails with message "The secure Contivity VPN client connection has been lost". I know the account is good as I can access fine from another machine, which is a W2K machine. I have uninstalled , re-installed many times...same results. Any info greatly appreciated.

Well, if the client gives you that error before it connects then something is blocking the ESP or AH packets (or it could be blocking any other necessary port but usually when the other ones are blocked it will give you a different message). If it is during a connection and you suddenly get that error it means something closed the connection, Contivity server thought your client was down or the ISP did something that cut the line long enough for the Contivity server to see the client was down.

Another thing that could cause this is if you are behind a NATing device and you are trying to use the client on multiple Computers that are found behind that NATing device. For this though, you could enable the NAT traversal feature, if you are one of the latest versions of code on the Contivity server and one of the latest versions of Contivity client.

Hope this helps.

Hey Frid4y,
Thanks for the info. It is before it makes the connection. I can take a W2K machine and connect to the same phone line and dial the same number an no problems. Also, the machine giving me the problem has the problem no matter where it is located. It is not a user issue as the person can log on to a different machine with no problems. I have 2 machines that are having the same problem, one is W98 and one was an upgrade from W98. This may be coincidental, but it is the only common factor I have been able to find.

Thanks again.

Hi there,

i have had the exact same scenario with a Win98 box, in the end we rebuilt the thing. I have now just come across the same thing but this time with a Win2K box. I personally think that there may be some corruption in the TCP stack but wouldn't have a clue how to fix it without a rebuild.

Cheers

Hi There,

Cause: The Contivity VPN Switch that you are connected to has either logged your connection off or the Switch is no longer responding
Solution: Try re-establishing the Contivity connection by clicking the Connect button. If this works, the connection was probably lost due to the Idle Timeout configured on the Contivity VPN Switch. If no data is transferred through the Contivity connection for a long period of time, 15 minutes or more, the Contivity VPN Switch automatically disconnects the connection

Our company has been experiencing random disconnects using Nortel Contivity VPN Client 4_15.03. Turning Keepalive off is fixing the problem. Can someone please tell me why turning keepalive off fixes disconnect problems? Will upgrading to the latest client resolve this?

I have a problem on contivity client idle timeout. A client is logged of automatically if the idle timeout is set under 11 minutes. However, the client keeps logging on when the idle timeout is set default or over 13 min because client(172.16.1.11) computer throw a packet every 12 min. to broadcast(172.16.1.255).

contivity 1100 ---- win2000pro.

the packet is:
(packet captured from "ethereal")
Protocol : BROSWER
Info : Host Announcement PC504, workstation, server, NT workstation, Potential Browser

First, I thought it is caused by windows' netbios, then I stopped it, but contivity client start netbios automatically on windows everytime when a tunnel established.(from "netstat -a" in command prompt)

and next, I stopped the service "Computer Browser", "workstation", and "messenger".
Also, I changed a registry" to set as "NOT MasterBrowser".
-->HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Services \Browser \Parameters
-->MaintainServerList == Auto->No

If anybody of you have a same problem(idle timeout(over 13min)doesn't work), and know a solution, please give me a help.
