Vpn connects- can't PING or browse

Hello,

I have set up VPN access to a corporate network. I make a broadband connection and then make my vpn connection. All is ok and the vpn connects. The problem is when i actually get on the network, i can't ping anything, i can't get into any of the mapped drives and can't get my e-mails.


I had the pc at work yesterday and plugged it into a network point whilst not connected to the corporate domain, i made a vpn connection to the network and was able to browse fine. I think it could be something to to with the setup of broadband.

Please help, i'm very stuck now.

In your vpn client did you: specify a DNS server?
" a WINS server?
" a DOMAIN?

Thanks for the reply netmanrick.

I am running Windows XP.

I have only entered an ip address of destination.

As for adding a wins server address and dns, where would i add these in my vpn client. is it the scetion on networking and then the properties of tcp/ip. At the moment this is all set to auto detect. If i change these settings will it afect my broadband connection???

Peen,
I would start simply.. by rclicking on my computer and going properties>Computer Name. You have a couple of opprotunites to join the domain here. This can be your trouble shooting area. Join the domain while connected.
See what happens.

Assuming that you can't ping by IP address, I think your issue may stem from a misconfiguration on the network adapters on the VPN server. Assuming that the VPN server is a multi-homed system, (2 NIC's, one for the LAN and one for the WAN), make sure the LAN NIC does not have a default gateway assigned. Make sure the WAN NIC does have the proper WAN side default gateway.

If you can, post back the results of an "ipconfig -all" command on the VPN server.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Ok i added the dns addresses and wins addresses to my vpn client, but this did not resolve the problem. I am connecting to a windows 2000 server and the client is running xp. I have an xp laptop which i use at home and on this I am able to connect to our corporate network. So i beleive the problem is with the machine, rather than a misconfiguration on our corporate network. there are also serveral other machines in the company running xp and 2000 which don't have a problem connecting via a vpn connection.

The XP machine is running symantec anti-virus, so i wondered if this would somehow block anything. Also it is running broadband provided by BT, could this have something to do with it.

I did an ipconfig/all

and for some reason it is coming up with the following subnet 255.255.255.255 which is incorrect, it should be 255.255.255.0. Also the defualt gateway field is empty. Could this be the problem. How do i enter this information???

I tried adding the pc to the coporate domain whilst connected to the VPN but it said that it could not contact the domain controller. Also once connected, when i click on a mapped drive, i get the following error message:- An errror occured whilst reconnecting to p: to \\tinky-winky\groups microsoft windows network: the network path was not found this connection has not been restored.

Could it be that the XP firewall is blocking a port????

First off, the ipconfig info you posted is for the VPN client, and it is correct. (at least for the VPN PPP adapter).
Under your VPN connection properties "Options" tab, do you have "Include Windows Logon domain" checked?
You say that you can't ping anything, do you mean by IP or host name?
Have you tried disabling your anti-virus software?

I have tried pinging by name and by IP address. Also I have got the include windows logon domain checked. I haven't tried disabling the AV software, but i will try that today.

Peen,

If that doesn't work, can you try to do a netowrk capture with Ethereal and post the results here? Let me know if you've never worked with Ethereal and I'll set you up.

Erm, might seem obvious but are you using a router / firewall in your house? If so make sure that this isn't the same internal IP address as the network at home. i.e. 192.168.x.x
