HI guys,

I'm a complete noob at VPN and I've just about managed to link up the two WinXP computers and get the connection to work. After that though Fierfox and no other internet application work.

Is there anything I have to set up?

Can I controll what applications go through the vpn and which use my old connection?

I only want to use the Internet of the vpn server.

Thanks a lot!

Your post is a bit confusing...
First---is this a remote access VPN or a site-to-site? What I'm reading is that
WinXP1---------VPN Server-------------Win XP2
which looks to be a remote access. What is doing the VPN?
Also, are you asking how to connect to WinXP2 from WinXP1 and use the internet?

I've got my computer here and I want to use the internet connection of a friend at his place. He has started a VPN server on his computer if that's the correct terminology and I've connected to him. We both have Win XP.

I can connect to him but once I do that every internet app on my pc stops working. I'm not really clear on how this is meant to work. Does the VPN just put me into his network? Do I have to change any internet settings on my pc once I'm connected?

Thanks a lot for your help.

The VPN connects you to his network. What are you trying to accomplish?

Connect to him and then use his internet using his IP. Sorry for being daft.

Allright I've finally found an article that explains the basics of VPN. I was pretty much walking into the blind. The VPN connects me into his network but how do I then get out into the internet from there?

Cheers

I think I got it to work by selecting the VPN as a connection in Internet Explorer. Once I've dialed in with IE everything else seems to work as well. Is that how you do it? How do I do the same thing without making IE connect stuff up?

If this ends up working I'm having a party!

Man this sh*t os working. You asked the right questions and I finally put the right thing into google!

Love you guys ;)

You could also use the gateway of your friend's network by selecting Advanced in tcp/ip properties (icon bottom right of screen).

Would that be on my Lan connection or the VPN connection? What is the typical gateway? Is that one of his router settings?!? Just so I continue to learn. I find it quite interesting what more functions Windows supports that I've never heard of...

Cheers

lan CONNECTION ON YOUR PC---IT DEFAULTS TO USE YOUR GATEWAY.
STUPID CAPS BUTTON...SORRY. BATTERY DYING IN KEYBOARD...TOO LAZY TO CHANGE THEM...LOL

I have to ask, what is the purpose of vpning to him and using his connection?
