VPN BIG problem!

Hi there!
Im quite new to VPN and not the biggest "pro" on earth when it comes to networks. The thing is that I want to create a VPN server on my XP Home Edition computer and I have followed most of the tutorials that I can find on the internet, but none of them seams to solve my problem.

I have a router which name is P-335WT (Zyxel), and I have now contacted them so they can help me to configure the router right.

But I just want to check so I dont do anything wrong, so there for I will make a step-by-step thing here so you maybe can check if im doing something wrong.

OBS! The "names" of the different things mght not be right all the times since im using XP Home Edition SE(swedish)

First of all I will start with the server.

Specs:
OS:XP Home Edition
Connection: LAN to Internet
Firewall status:Off

1.
I open the "Metwork connections window"
2.
I Press "Create a new connection"
3.
I mark "Create an advanced connection" and then I press next.
4.
In the next window I mark "Accept incoming connections" and presses next.
5.
Then I get a list of different components and other things, I uncheck all of them and presses next.
6.
In the next window I mark "Allow Viritual private connections" and presses next
7.
Now it asks me about users and things. I mark ONE of the users that I want to login as, and presses next.
8.
Next window shows me alot of TCP/IP and other stuffs that I can config if I want to by pressing "Proporties", but I do not change anything there and presses next.
9.
Finally the last window which says that im done blahblahblah and I press "Finish"

And thats it with the servers configurations

Next is the Client that should Connect to the VPN

Specs:
OS:XP Pro
Connection: WLAN to Internet
Firewall status:Off

1.
First of all I open the "Network connections window"
2.
There I press "Create a new connection"
3.
Once the wizard shows up I press "Next"
4.
After that I mark "Connect to network on my work" and presses next
5.
Now I mark "Connection to viritual Private Network" and presses next.
6.
Now it asks for a Organisation name, and there I type "test" and presses next.
7.
The next window is the real problem, you see, should I enter my computers "name" or anything else? But ok I enter my computers name here and lets say that the name of it is
"testcomp" after that I press next.
8.
Next window I just press "Finish".

Now I get a new window that "pop-ups" and asks for "User name" and a "Password", and I suppose thats the normal windows login username and the password for that user on the server, and not the clients windows login username and
and password.


Please check this and see so I have done everything right.

And by the way... Once I enter my username and password and etc I get the message

At some point, you must enter the public IP address of your VPN server. I think it is step 7 in your description, but it is hard to sort out for certain.

Yeah...I have tried that aswell... the thing is that the computers im using is behind a router, and there fore it seams like im using the same WAN ip on both...dont ask me why or how:S, and no I dont mean that LAN IP..

Hope that Zyxel will respons soon with my little problem^^

Are you trying to create a VPN between two computers that are on the same LAN?

Yes...I dont know if its possible...is it?
and bye the way..if I change the computer name to and IP insteed...should this then work(if im not connected to the same lan)
And it might seams strange to make a VPN in the same LAN, but I want to test VPN so I later on can use it in school.
Whould be great to have acces to my home computer from the school computer..
And the idea is that I should be able to use "ViceVersa" for file syncing.
If you have any other good ideas of solving the problem, then im open for suggestions

You should be able to make the VPN connection across the lan without any problem -- you simply need to us the private IP address of the server instead of the public.

Ok..I just for amoment checked in the "Proporties" for my VPN network. Is there any proporties that I should install or do something with?(since I have the some things that says "Install" and etc etc...

Your VPN server is not running. I should have read a bit closer.

In step 8 of your server setup, you must change some TCP/IP properties to make it work. You should be able to open the properties of the existing incoming connection and change the TCP/IP properties to make it work now.

In this case, uncheck the box that says "allow callers to access my local area network". You may want to enable that when you are connecting from outside the network, but it could cause problems in your test setup. You also need to assign a range of addresses for the connection. 4 or 5 addresses should be fine for XP home, since you will only be able to allow one incomming conection at a time. Technically, you could use only two (one for the server side and one for the client side), but it takes a while for the addresses to release sometimes, so it is better to have extra. If you disconnect and then try to reconnect, the first client side address may not be available for a few minutes.

Thanks mate..that worked!
Now if I understands you correctly, all I need to do if I want to connect from another network to my home network is to "configure" the "allow callers to access my local area network" box so its checked and also set the WAN ip for the client computers....right?

well then there is a new problem....I dont know my IP for the client comp, when I use the "ipconfig" command in a cmd, all I get is the LAN IP, and not the WAN.

And if I check the ip from some sort of a site it says that I have the same ip for two computers...which seams abit strange to me.

I might change this post to another part of the forum soon, will add a link to it.
But your still more then welcome to keep typing on this topic aswell about this problem, as long as its aint a problem for the admins of this site.

Answered your IP question on the other thread.

Your problem at this point is getting your router to forward VPN traffic to your VPN server. I am not at all familiar with your particular router, but most have a section in configuration for port forwarding. You need to forward TCP port 1723 to the private IP address of your VPN server. You may or may not have an option to allow PPTP passthrough. If you have that option, it needs to be turned on. If you do not have the option, it may be turned on by default.

If you have it working internally, this should get you set for a real connection from the outside world.
