Could anybody find the time to give me a brief description of how VPN's function and possibly some design tips?

Thanks,

Daniel,

I am no expert. My primary VPN is still a work in progress. Peterve is the best vpn guy I have met here. My experience shows that there are a lot of non documented issues with connecting network sites together with other network sites. I was able to easily construct a vpn where remote users (single pc's) could connect to a vpn server. win2k works better than nt4.0 by far. It seems all vpn's, Microsofts included, have the same features, capabilities and PITFALLS. For example; wouldn't you think a VPN would show network neighborhood (slower of course) on both sides? Hah! It's not that easy. A single server for multiple remote users is easy like you would think. My personal opinion? Dont invest a single penny. Invest some time, and if you have a win2k server try setting one up. Learn the basics then ask vpn vendors if you can network neighborhood through the vpn tunnel. How easily is it to set up. Do they have any referrences you can call. It is a great concept still waiting to happen.
